I was reading the newspaper at 3 years old with my dad because of Sesame Street. I love phonics to this day because of it. I still have that 1-2-3 4 5 6-7-8-9-10 11 12 song stuck in my head and to this day I can’t count without thinking about the tune. I was there when Mr. Hooper died and I learned about death from not just that show but the Mr. Hooper book. I learned “1 2 3 is ichi ni san” when Big Bird went to Japan. I used to sing Ernie’s song when I looked up at the moon. I used to watch the Sesame Street in the morning and the repeat in the afternoon when I was little. My favorite doll was an Ernie doll and I remember carrying him around forever. My favorite book was “The Monster at the End of This Book” with Grover, and my dad did a great Grover voice when he read it. The only memories I have of Sesame Street are good ones.

I learned to love learning because of Sesame Street. The only thing they’re indoctrinating people with is how to be nice to other people and act like a normal human being. Maybe if some of these Fox News anchors watched it they wouldn’t have turned out to be such awful people? Or maybe they did and they just decided to throw their hearts away long ago to Rupert Murdoch.

If you consider Sesame Street liberal propaganda you’re out of your microscopic mind.

Also reblogging for this comment. The Jim Henson company does not push politics. It pushes common decency. I can’t think of a better example of how NOT political they are than Big Bird’s appearance on SNL. Yes, his mention at the Presidential Debate is talked about, but not the content or what it means to PBS. He didn’t encourage people to vote one way or another.

The appearance was wholly pleasant and nonpartisan and was not about pointing fingers. Because that’s not what the Jim Henson company is about.

And PBS as a whole? It got me to enjoy learning, with Sesame Street, to enjoy reading with Reading Rainbow, etc. It’s good educational programming.

Sesame Street is so great for kids. It has been proven, time and time again, that kids who watch Sesame Street growing up tend to read more. do better in school, and have better social skills than kids who don’t watch Sesame Street. And these trends continue up through high school. The Impact of Sesame Street on Preschool Children: A Review and Synthesis of 30 years’ Reseach (Fisch, Truglio, and Cole) is a study that looked into the long term benefits of watching Sesame Street, in case anyone can get their hands on that…or if you want to send that to Mitt Romney haha.

The fact is that Sesame Street has continuously helped kids learn. The people who make Sesame Street test and retest their programming segments in order to make sure that they are reaching their educational goals.  Nothing goes on the air unless it has been proven to be effective in helping kids learn. Do you think Spongebob does that? No. And let’s not forget that Sesame Street was originally created to help out kids from lower income families who may not be able to afford pre-school. If you think that wanting all children to have an equal opportunity to learn and grow is part of the “liberal agenda” and not simple common decency, then I think you’re an idiot.
